The library offers a client-focused service to the lecturers of the UJ Faculty of Science! This portal is specifically develop to your needs for information and library support!

LIBRARY MEMBERSHIP TO THE UJ LIBRARY


UJ Staff and students have access to all UJ Campus Libraries. Membership is valid for the duration of their affiliation with the University.

 

Prospective postgraduates, Visiting Researchers, Students from other SA Universities, Students from Foreign Universities, Alumni Members, Honorary Membership and Former Employees of the UJ, must complete the UJ LIBRARY MEMBERSHIP FORM and submit to the Library Lending Desk staff.

LIBRARY MEMBERSHIP TO OTHER UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES


According to an agreement between Libraries at Higher Education Institutions in South Africa, UJ Library Membership to other University Libraries is granted to staff, Masters & PhD's students.

 

The reasons for that membership could be:

  • Library near place of residence;
  • Library, which provide resources not available at the UJ Library.

 

The application for Library Membership to other University Libraries EXPIRE at the end of each academic year and need to be RENEWED annually.

 

Steps in applying for access to other University Libraries:

 

  1. Complete the Letter of Introduction form.
  2.  Only 2 libraries can be selected.
  3. Submit the completed form to your subject librarian (by fax or in person) accompanied by prove of registration. 
  4.  Specify if you would like the Letter to be collected, posted or faxed. You will be contacted once the Letter of Introduction is ready.
  5. Please ensure that you don’t have overdue books or unpaid funds in the UJ Library.
  6. Hand the Letter of Introduction at the selected library.
  7. Please adhere to all the rules and regulations of that library.

Borrowing from other UJ Campus Library: Inter Campus Loan

 

Inter Campus Loan (ICL) Service is available to ALL  registered users of the University. An Inter Campus Loan is a transaction in which books and journal articles are made available by one UJ Campus Library to another upon a request.The purpose is to provide good and speedily delivery service to UJ Library clients.

 

Where to start?

 

The need for this service will arise when you search the UJLink (Library Catalogue) and find a book or a journal available at other Library Campus. Search also A-to-Z Journals to ensure that the journal is not available in electronic format.

 

Once you establish that the book or journal you need is not available at your Campus Library or that all copies are already in use by other users, you can:

 

  1. Check the UJLink and A-to-Z Journals for availability;
  2.  Only books that are on open shelves can be loaned;
  3. Write down the details of the title, including the campus and shelf number;
  4. Approach your Library Campus Inter Library Loan (ILL) office;
  5.  Complete the cards which are available at the ILL office;
  6. There are two different cards: yellow for books and orange for journals; make sure that you complete the right card.Once the card is filled, just put it in the allocated “post” box

 

You MUST come to the ILL office and inquire if the material is received within 3 working days.

ORDERING  MATERIALS  FROM OTHER LIBRARIES:INTER LIBRARY LOAN


Inter Library Loan (ILL) is a method of obtaining and supplying materials, which are not available in the UJ Library. This service is on National and International level.

 

Who qualifies for ILL service?

This service is available to UJ staff, Masters & Doctoral students. 

 

Why use ILL service?

If the material is not available on the UJLink (Library Catalogue) or through the A-to-Z Journals, you can place a request through Inter Library Loan services. The item will be requested from a library on National or International level (only with the concensus of the requester).   

 

Cost

South African requests are FREE of charge. For international requests, FEE charges are applied.

 

How to get started?

 

  1. If you are first time user, you need to register as an Inter Lending member by completing ILL registration form. You can scan, fax or e-mail after completion. The ILL form is available at the ILL office. 
  2. Once the ILL form is submitted to the ILL office you can start using the service.
  3. You can place ILL requests in two ways: In person by completing the available cards at the ILL office or Electronically – by placing your request directly through the Inter Library Loan web page. To place electronic request you will need to login with your SURNAME, STAFF/STUDENTS number and PIN. PIN is easy to create, just follow these instructions.
  4. Once the request is fulfilled by ILL, you will receive an e-mail notification to collect the item or a reason why the request is not fulfilled.
  5. If an item is not available in South Africa, you will be asked to request it Internationally.

MY LIBRARY ACCOUNT (CURRENT LOANS; RENEWALS, ITEMS ON HOLD) 


MyUJLink is your Library Account record.

 

Access is available either through the UJLink (Library Catalogue) or directly through the MyUJLink website.

 

You will be required to login with your SURNAME, STAFF/STUDENT NUMBER and PIN. Don't have a PIN, learn how to create. Don't remember your old PIN number, ask Lending Desk staff for assistance.

 

Through MyUJLink you can:

  • Your currently checked-out books. Note the DUE date for returning the book to the Library, to avoid fines for late return.

  • You can RENEW your books. You can renew either all of your books or only those you would like to use more. Need HELP?
  • Place books on HOLD. If you would like to place a hold on a book that is currently OUT of the library, click on "
  • Preferred Searches option. If you have a favourite author or subject for which you often search when using UJLink, you can save the search with the click of a button. This will prevent you from having to key in the search each time and let you place reserves on new materials quicker. Need HELP?
  • You can Search the Library Catalogue for books, journals, print Theses & Dissertations, etc. Need HELP with some searching TIPS?

RESERVE COLLECTION: COURSE RESERVES


UJ Library Reserve Collection consists of Electronic Course Reserve (ECR) and Printed Course Reserve materials.

 

Usually these are library materials with high expected usage.

STUDY COLLECTION


The Study Collection contains books with a higher frequency of use than the books in the Open Collection. Request for books to be placed on the Study Collection may be submitted by:

 

  • Lecturers

  • Subject Librarians

  • Head of the Lending Services

 

The loan period for the study collection is 5 days. Two items may be borrowed at the time. These items CANNOT be renewed. Each year the Study Collection can be reviewed.

ONLINE EXAM PAPERS 


 

The Library provides access to Online Exam papers  (PIN is required), which are submitted by the UJ Departments.

 

The submission is NOT COMPULSORY for the Departments.

 

If you are submitting previous exam papers, complete the application form in either English or Afrikaans. Read MORE....

 

The access is through log-in.  If you don't have a PIN/password code, it is easy to create. Just follow the instructions.

SUBMIT & SEARCH FOR UJ THESES & DISSERTATIONS IN THE LIBRARY


Once the UJ Masters & Doctoral students complete their Theses & Dissertations, they must submit copies to the library in both PRINT and ELECTRONIC format (PDF on CD-Rom).

 

The Departments & students need to consult the submission guidelines for Electronic Theses & Dissertations Procedure 

 

To search for available UJ Electronic Theses & Dissertations go to UJDigispace. The new UJ Institutional Repository portal can give you full-text access to Theses & Dissertations from 2002 - current.

COPYRIGHT


Why the concern about copyright ? 

 

It is the University’s policy to comply with the Copyright Act and Regulations and in so doing to respect the rights of the authors and publishers and to pay reasonable license fees where required by law.

 

Infringement of copyright by the Universities, Heads of Departments or lecturers and students could result in legal  action and possible awards of damages. Read the Copyright website for more information.

PLAGIARISM


Many people think of plagiarism as copying another's work, or borrowing someone else's original ideas. But terms like "copying" and "borrowing" can disguise the seriousness of the offense:

 

According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, to "plagiarize" means:

  •  to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own 
  •  to use (another's production) without crediting the source
  • to commit literary theft
  • to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.

 

In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else's work and lying about it afterward.

Make use of Turnitin @ UJ: A tool for online plagiarism prevention that is integrated with Edulink.  Lecturers may choose to have learners submit their assignments, thesis, etc. electronically via turnitin for plagiarism detection (to prevent learners from submitting copies of other learners' assignments or copying and pasting from the Internet and/or journals, etc.)

CITING & REFERENCING


By citing and referencing we are acknowledge the works of the authors, which references we consulted or directly quoted in our research paper, theses or dissertation, or article for publication.

 

Every Department from the Faculty of Science uses it's own method (usually Harvard method) of referencing. The referencing usually follows a specific journal publication method.

 

Students and Researchers are given specific guidelines by the Departments, which they need to follow to complete a literature review or a research paper.

 

When you are busy preparing article for publication, you should find what are the citing and referencing requirements for that specific journal (publisher)

 

In the Library we have available Reference Techniques document (PDF) for both Harvard & APA methods.

 

Additional citing and reference tool is RefWorks. You have use RefWorks to import and manage your references, you can directly "write-and-cite" into your research paper and export your reference list according to the required reference method needs.

VIRTUAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT (VLE): EDULINK SUPPORT


The  subject librarians make use of EduLink to support the UJ’s integrated approach to learning, teaching and assessment. 

 

The rationale is that WebCT courses with online access to recommended or prescribed articles via course customized pages, will improve students’ use of licensed database content while at the same time minimize the effort and confusion of using a variety of databases or points of entry.

  

Objectives:

  • To integrate the various stand alone information resources onto one platform

  • To engage learners in an environment that they feel comfortable in

  •  Encourage learners to use the available information resources more efficiently.
